REACTIONS TO JESUS’ BIRTH
When news that Mary, the mother of Jesus, was pregnant reached Elizabeth who was pregnant with John the Baptist, the unborn John reacted with a leap in his mother’s womb. John was joyful that the Messiah was to be born. The shepherds caring for their sheep on a hillside near Bethlehem heard the startling announcement from unexpected angels that the Messiah was born. These shepherds praised God for the announcement and visited Mary, Joseph and Jesus. The devout man of God, Simeon, had received a promise that he would live to see the Messiah. Upon realizing the fulfillment of his wish he said, “Behold, this Child is appointed for the fall and the rise of many people in Israel, and for a sign to be opposed - and a sword will pierce even your own soul - to the end that thoughts may be revealed.” Anna, a prophetess prayer warrior, gave thanks for Jesus when she saw Him at His dedication in the temple. The Magi from the East traveled a great distance to honor Jesus whom they believed to be the King of the Jews. After finding Jesus they fell to the ground and worshiped Him giving Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
What reaction is appropriate for us when we realize that Jesus is born to be the Savior of all mankind and the Lord of all creation? I believe the correct response to Jesus is to follow His directions prior to His death. Jesus instituted the Lord’s Supper with these instructions - Remember Me. Every Sunday we remember Jesus for His suffering, death and resurrection for our sins. Christmas does not change our reactions to Christ. He is still our Lord and Savior. We remember Him when we partake of the bread and juice that we would never forget the body and blood given for us. Have a wonderful holiday!
