The Church As The Body Of Christ
Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007The Bible makes frequent use of analogies to communicate accurately the idea God desires His people to understand and remember. To emphasize the power of God the Scriptures in the Gospels refer to God’s people as a kingdom. The Christians are God’s subjects while He is the King. The kingdom of God is a victorious group of God’s people who march forth with the truth of God that conquers people’s heart for Christ. We want to be on a winning team which is winning now with expectations of having greater victories for Christ in the future.
The analogy of the human body found in the Bible transcends time and culture. Paul in 1 Corinthians chapter twelve refers to the church as the body of Christ. He repeats his emphasis of the church as the body of Christ in the letters to the Ephesians and Colossians. God’s message is clear that Christ is the head of the body (church) and we, His people, are the various members of the body. The illustration of the body of Christ being the church is fitting because the emphasis is on the head, Christ. He is the divine Savior and leader who exercises His authority through the written Word, the Bible. A secondary emphasis is the functioning of the parts of the body (Christians) in submission to the head who is Christ. In our giftedness we serve Christ, the head of the church, to honor and glorify Christ.
Our Christian service to our King will never earn us salvation. We serve because we are saved. Serving to be saved is an incorrect motive. The sincere and pure in heart may waste valuable time and energy over how much service is enough or what is the best service to give. The energy wasted in attempting to earn salvation can be applied to serving Christ with freedom from guilt and fear. We are the body of Christ on earth until Jesus returns to claim His people. He is in charge and we serve Him as an expression of our faith.
